Today is National Bird Day! In western PA it’s not a great day to be a bird. Our actual temperature is 6 degrees with winds blowing at 14 mph and it makes the windchill feel like -11 degrees. Schools were cancelled and dogs hate to have to go outside. So I am thankful I am not a bird, unless you are my cockatiel that stays inside my house.
I have to admit, I really do enjoy having a bird in my home. I brings a cheerful atmosphere to my home because she likes to chirp and sing often. Since it’s National Bird Day, I am contemplating what it means to have “wings”. I’m talking about the type of wings that allow you to fly as a person to use all of your gifts and talents and “fly” higher than you ever thought was possible.
When fledglings are learning to fly, there is a time when they exercise their wings and continue just hopping across the ground. They are not able to reach a point where they can fly no matter how much they try. I think as humans we can understand that feeling because while we are growing and changing, we feel like we are fledglings. We are constantly lifting ourself up and getting knocked back down. This feeling is especially intense during periods when you require alot of self-growth. Finally, all at once everything seems to come together and they are finally able to stay up in the air.
This is such a good metaphor that we go through as humans. Sometimes in our life our changes are difficult. It feels like it takes for ever for you to become an “expert” in your own life and truly know what you want and what you need to be happy. It takes so long to get there because there is only one you! No one has taken this path before. You are the pioneer! There is nothing wrong with being a fledgling. But the question is are you holding yourself back from soaring and actually flying up above the clouds to reach your own potential.
The ability to “fly” successfully is made possible by the preparation work. Just keep trying and making an effort no matter what. Animals in the wild don’t quit. Quitting is not an option. Finally, all at once, all of the effort will come together and they are then able to glide off into the sunset.
Take a look at this video on how much a baby eagle prepares for take off before it can finally celebrate the the effortless flight. He learns to harness the power of the wind beneath his wings.
Being a human isn’t any different. We need to continue to try and not give up. We need to take on some of the eagle’s characteristics and be persistent and fearless and not give up. Every day that you continue you try, you are one step closer to flying in the life of your dreams.
What step can you take today to harness the wind beneath your wings to fly?
